Who remembers Delia's catalog? I remember my cousin Treeia and I flipping through Delia's when we were younger, picking out things that we never ordered. This shirt is bright, fun, and floral! I paired it with some wardrobe essentials for work, but could easily wear it with some denim shorts on the weekend.

I really thought that I just couldn't pull off the jumpsuit look with my body type. I actually tried it on months ago when it first hit Walmart stores (it was regular priced and not in my budget at the time so I left it behind . . . until I saw it on sale on Walmart.com. I made some minor adjustments (pulled out the drawstring and added a belt), but everytime that I've worn it I've gotten so many compliments. An added bonus is that it's super comfy!

Sherita's getting married!! And I was super excited when I received an invite to her "Tea Party" themed bridal shower! The skirt and white sandals were a Goodwill find a month ago and were perfect! Now the hat, let's talk about it. I bought the blue hat from Maxway for only $6 and loved the look, but it just didn't give the outfit the pop I was looking for. I borrowed the white veiled hat the day before the bridal shower from my friends mother, and also loved the look (I am loving all things vintage lately), but again it just didn't give the outfit that pop I was looking for. The day of the bridal shower, with two hours to spare, I decided to venture out and find the perfect hat in my IMPR(4L)ess budget! I ended up at Dots, the first hat I tried on was ok, then I tried on this one. One of the cashier's stopped stocking earrings and exclaimed, "That's cute, buy it, like right now!" Another customer asked, "Are you gonna wear it with what you have on?" Another customer walked up, sooo you get where I'm going . . . I purchased the hat, declined a bag, ripped off the tags, put it on my head, and went to the bridal shower. I had so much fun! Now I have to figure out what to wear to the wedding in a few weeks, maybe Black and White?

Every once in a while walking across campus, I will see an undergraduate outfit that I think can be recreated for the grown and sexy. I really like the recent off the shoulder, blousy trend but rarely do I have the opportunity to get all dressed up. Last week I finally had a day off (even though I ended up in the office for about an hour-it's annual report time) and put this outfit together with some older items and recent purchases. I spent most of my day off thrifting with my sister and Camden. I came across a great sale at Plato's Closet, clearance was an additional 60%! My sister got a pair of NY&CO and Old Navy Jeans for only $15! I returned later that evening with some girls from work and got two rompers for only less than $10! My girl Brianna got the best deal of all with a romper and at least 6 summer dresses for her beach vacation for only $50, now you can't beat that!

Independence Day is next month, but I've been wearing a lot of red, white, and blue or just blue and white lately. The Ann Taylor Blouse above and the Merona (Target) Tank are some of the fabulous finds from my best Goodwill Shopping Trip video. I had been searching and searching for a skinny red belt and finally found this one in the beauty supply store (or just "hair store" if you're country).

Now to these Banana Republic Pants, white pants have been on my thrift wish list for quite some time. Last week, one of my girls called me to meet her at my favorite Triad Goodwill location to help her decide on a few things she had picked out. We joke because my number 1 goal for her this year is to stop wearing juniors clothes all the time! After leaving the dressing room and with 15 minutes before the store closed, I headed to the pants and right there in front of me where these pants! I didn't even try them on before I purchased them. They are a perfect fit and are fully lined.

Now isn't that what IMPR(4L)ess is all about, finding quality name brand staple items at thrift and consignment price.

If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter (@impr4less), you already know that I was shopping at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, NC earlier this week. I was in the mall less than 30 minutes and had already purchased these shoes. I actually saw them online while looking for another pair of nude wedges that were no longer unavailable in Greensboro. These shoes are HOTTTT! They are so comfortable and were so worth $29.99 (original price $79).

 

I am always amazed when I look back at pictures from the beginning of IMPR(4L)ess and now. I was pretty confident with my sense of style, but blogging about personal style and fashion has really made me step my game up. Besides my hair, the most noticeable differences are my waistline and hips. You already know that I'm wearing a bodyshaper (The shapewear post is almost done) but I really like how these skinny pants make me look SKINNY! I can't believe that I've been totally against skinny jeans for so long.

I guess you could say that I went on a shoe shopping spree this month because just last weekend purchased these Charlotte Russe pumps. I finally got out of the house for more than shopping with a much needed girl’s night of dinner and dancing. I wasn’t excited about my outfit at all (I actually wore this outfit to Crabtree Valley Mall, I didn't even take pictures of the going out outfit). I stopped by Plato’s Closet on my way to dinner hoping to find some accessories to spice it up. Instead of finding jewelry, I found these brand new Charlotte Russe shoes! Now these are definitely 2 hours shoes and didn’t make it for dancing, but they are too cute for only $15. Girl's night definitely made me realize my lack of casual going out clothes. I have plenty dresses, but they were a little too dressy for the club we went to, like I need another reason to go shopping.

Who is that crazy lady taking pictures in Walmart?!?

Oh it's just me. More Miss Tina by Tina Knowles (yep, Beyonce's mama) has arrived at Walmart on Cone Blvd and Walmart on S. Elm-Eugene in Greensboro. Everything is under $20 and sizes range from XS(2/4) to 2XL (18/20). There are quite a few items that are on my summer wardrobe wishlist, but I will definitely be getting this maxi dress and maybe another dress that I just saw this weekend. I first featured Miss Tina for Walmart back in January with my homecoming dress and again in March with a few items I purchased for the spring. What I love about Miss Tina is of course the cost and the quality of the items. Don't fret if you don't live in NC, you can search online for a Walmart in your area that sells Miss Tina and limited items are also available online at walmart.com.

How many times have you had discussions with your mothers, aunts, or girlfriends about dressing your age? Did it begin in middle school or high school when you wanted to look older or maybe after college when you were still trying to look young? What does it really mean to “dress your age”? For me personally, it means to dress like a mother, a professional, a well put together, I feel good about myself ALL the time, confident, keeping it sexy, young woman. I’ve noticed lately that a lot of women my age (25-35) are still caught up in shopping in the juniors section. I’m not saying never buy another juniors items, but really after 25, your entire wardrobe should NOT consist primarily of juniors.

My Transition from Juniors to Misses

Up until about 25, I was a 3/4- 5/6, even after Camden, I was around a 9/10. I really had no other choice but to shop in the juniors section because misses clothes just didn’t fit quite right. Extra smalls were too little and smalls were baggy in the wrong places. I worked as a server/bartender through college and wore the same outfit to work every day so my mindset about clothes was to purchase outfits for occasions; homecoming, road trips, girl’s night, date night, etc. My budget was also much different through college. I used my student refund check to pay my rent up for several months and I always had extra cash in my pocket (one of the many perks I miss about waiting tables).

When I started working at UNCG full-time, I had just turned 26 and was one of the youngest people in my office. I soon realized that I had to step my style game up if I wanted to earn the respect of my colleagues and keep their respect with my hard work. My mindset about clothes began to shift from outfits to individual pieces. If I just had 5 pairs of pants, I could switch up my tops to make it seem like I had a lot more clothes in my wardrobe than I actually did. As my lifestyle changed; I was sitting at a desk M-F, 8-5 pm, in graduate school at night and in a new relationship, so did my weight, dramatically. Before I knew it I was an 11/12 and before going up to a 13/14 or 15/16, I made the decision to no longer shop in the junior’s section because a size 8/10 or S/M in women’s made me feel better about my size, Simple As That. My budget for clothes also decreased, without a refund check, I had to learn to pay rent, a car payment, and everything else with my once a month paycheck (no more tip money).

Other Reasons to Shop Misses

• Quality, Quality, Quality – I have a mortgage, a car payment, and a son that will NOT stop growing, so I don’t have the money or the time to replace items every season, every year. It’s important to have quality wardrobe essentials. Misses clothes cost more, but they last longer.

• Size and Fit – I work with undergraduate students and administrators at UNCG every day. I hardly ever have to worry about appropriate skirt length or my neckline being too low with misses.

Showcase Your Personal Style!

Dressing your age doesn’t have to be boring and old. I love earrings, shoes, and scarves because they offer endless possibilities for changing up an outfit. In the first picture I took a simple sweater twinset and added a belt and accessories to make it my own. I’m wearing heels to work, but could switch them out for flats to go to an afterschool program with Camden. In the second picture, I added a cute flat sandal to a simple sweater and khaki pants to make it young and fresh.

If you are a recent college graduate, fast approaching 30, or over 30 and still stuck in the juniors section, I challenge you to go to the misses section the next time you are out shopping. Take some time to try on a couple of things, a blouse, pants, and a dress. Look at the seams, the stitching, even the materials.  Compare the items to your favorite juniors item. Still not convinced? Happy Friday! Today you get 2for1, what I'm wearing today and an outfit that I wore a few weeks ago. Target is definately my go to place for trends each season, because they are inexpensive without the lack of quality like some stores. I had been checking out these shoes for at least a month before they finally went on clearance. My only regret is that I didn't get them in a fun color, leave it to me to keep it simple and basic. The same thing with this tunic, they had a few other colors in Goodwill, but I went with white. I'm stepping outside of my comfort zone more with bright colors and colorblocking, but at the end of the day you can count on me to stick to what I know! I'll save the fun colors for my nails!

To My Best Friends

I finally had the chance to sit down and read through the May issue of ESSENCE Magazine, The Girlfriends Issue. I've always had a lot of friends, one of the rewards of being a high energy extrovert or in plain terms a social butterfly. But I only have a small group of best friends, sisters really, who have had my back through all of my many life changes. Shakira and I have been friends since we were 5 years old, I don't remember a time before I knew her. And while we are so different, we have remained close all these years, went to college together, and still keep in touch even though we are miles (a 12 hour drive) apart. We've only had one disagreement, in college over a boy, and didn't speak to one another for an entire year. When we finally reached out to each other it was like all the pieces fell right back into place. Shemia and I met during the rebellious years of high school working at Food Lion. She went to a rival high school, but they had a better football time so our friendship grew out of football games and after parties. I smoked my first cigarette with Mimi, went to my first concert (Super Jam!), and got my first body piercing (Senior Beach Week!). When I went away to college I remember us crying like babies. Over the years we have shared more tears but way more laughter.Standing by her side as she married her husband was one of those moments in life that I will never forget. In my mind, I was like "damn, i'm really doing the ugly cry!" but when you've been a best friend who've seen two people go through so much together and then come together in the name of love, well it's ok to do the ugly cry. And finally Jo'Vonia, my "bestie". We met in college, I don't exactly remember how or when but I have very few college memories without her. We kinda hung out and ran in the same circles for a while, but after she let me sleep on her couch one summer when I couldn't afford housing we became inseparable. Our relationship has grown as our life roles has changed from college students, to mothers (our son's are a couple of months apart), adult college students, and now for Jae, wife, but our friendship has remained solid. I am thankful and grateful for the many girls that I have my life, but to my best friends, Shakira, Shemia, and Jo'Vonia, I love you all like sisters. Thank you for always having my back!

Keeping it Simple

IT'S JUST HAIR!

I almost didn't post this outfit because I was having a total bad hair day. I know that everyone has them, but for most naturals, it's even more of a challenge because people are already looking at you sideways for breaking away from the norm. Recently, I’m finding myself at the “now what” phase of my natural hair journey. Do I continue to let it grow, cut it off again, or begin the loc journey? I've been revisiting why I went natural in the first place in an effort to guide my decision . . .

-When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?

I big chopped in 2008. I tried to transition for a few months with weaves, but after battling the two very different textures of relaxed and natural hair I gave in, got a relaxer and a haircut. Two weeks later and already needing a touch up, my regular stylist refused to cut my off my relaxed hair. I went to Great Clips in my local Walmart and after an hour finally convinced the stylist to cut off ALL of my hair. Because I didn’t have any hair, my initial reaction was “Whoa, what have I done?” for the first few weeks. After getting my hair cut by an actual barber, I totally embraced the short cut. I went on an earring shopping spree for a few months to compliment my new look.

-How did family and friends react to the new you? What was your response to them?

My family and friends were totally shocked that I cut my hair. I had worn very short relaxed hair for a few years, but it still was shocking to most. My mom and my aunts amazingly loved it. My best friends hated it, but that was almost expected. I’ve always felt like hair is just hair, it will grow back. I’ve had every hairstyle from a jheri curl to a quick weave, so I just let the people who didn’t like my hair be entitled to their opinion and move on.

-Why did you choose to go natural?

I recently blogged about why I decided to go natural in my ALL Hair is Good post.

Initially, my reason for going natural was because I was looking for something that was both cost and time effective I would no longer have to spend time and money in the salon every other week. During the last few years of relaxed short hair, I was in the salon for at least 2 hours, every other week, and spending $50 per visit. After I big chopped, I would go to the barber shop in the morning for 30 minutes (this time varies depending on the time of day and day of the week) every other week, spending only $10 per visit!

-Why did you choose to grow your hair out?

I started out taking part in a grow out challenge in early 2009, but big chopped my hair again for my best friend’s wedding in April 2009. I almost wore a wig in her wedding, but instead embraced my bald head. I look back at the pictures and see self-confidence. After the wedding, I got one last haircut and have now been growing my hair out for two years. During the first year of growing out my hair, I only went to the salon twice for a deep conditioning treatment and to get my ends trimmed. Now that my hair is about 6-7 inches long, I still don’t frequent the salon regularly but I’ve tried different braided and two strand twist styles that have ranged from $20 to $50 per visit depending on where I go to get my hair done (someone’s kitchen, beauty school, or salon).

I'm not sure what the next phase of my natural hair journey will be but whatever I decide, IT'S JUST HAIR!

This is the very first time that I've purchased an outfit during a Goodwill visit. I didn't even realize this tank and skirt matched until I tried them on in the dressing room. I will usually make my purchase and later at home figure out what I am going to pair it with. I forgot to mention in my Sunday Best post that the skirt was from the new Goodwill at 3519 N. Elm that just opened last week. I absolutely love this new store, not only because it's about 5 minutes from my house, but it's really nice. The store has a lot of Target new stock, especially household items. I saw everything from lamps and picture frames to air mattresses and cookware sets. The store also had some new clothing items from Target, but it was mainly items that were on clearance after the holiday that I didn't really like anyway. But I did purchase a 3-pack of Hanes boy shorts for me and Camden a 3-pack of boxers for only $2.99.

Today is the last day of the spring semester at UNCG. While I was taking pictures some students were literally HANGING OUT in Foust Park. Amazingly, I think they were actually studying (or so it seemed from their conversation).

Spring Is Here!

The weather has been so nice this past week in NC (with the exception of a few crazy storms), let's just hope that spring is here to stay. I'm finally getting the opportunity to wander around campus and take some pictures outside. One of the things that I absolutely love about UNC Greensboro's campus is all of the green spaces. One thing that I've learned about taking pictures on a college campus is to take them in the morning before students are out and about or in the late afternoon when students are returning to their dorm rooms or leaving campus.

Every woman should have that classic black and white outfit that makes you look and feel good. I've had this shirt for at least three years now and I wear it every spring when the weather is just beginning to warm up. This outfit also happens to match my kitchen and NEW (well new to me) 5 piece dining set that I found at a yard sale! This was really one of those lucky finds that would probably never happen again because I didn't venture out until after 9 am (true yard sale shoppers know that by then all the good stuff is usually gone) with intentions of getting some gas and heading home after spending the night at my mama's house. I couldn't believe that this set was only $35, so I called my mama, who called my daddy, who happened to be right down the street to come and load it up. The owner didn't have any change so, I got it for only $30!! This set was in great condition with a few speckles on the top of the table, that was easily fixed with a can of spray paint. I have to add a clear gloss this weekend and find some red seat cushions. I really wish I knew how to sew, I would make some seat cushions and matching curtains. Sometimes the best deals are just meant to be!

Boyfriend Blazer

I've been searching for the perfect boyfriend blazer since last year. Everytime that I thought I had found "the one" it was above the price point I wanted to spend or didn't quite fit. Last week, The Fashionista Next Door posted this picture and I couldn't believe that this blazer was Kasper! That's a brand that I would have definitely overlooked. I went thrifting over the weekend and found the perfect Kasper boyfriend blazer in Goodwill! I was a little iffy about the shoulder pads, but I felt like it gave the blazer character. I knew it was a keeper when I walked into the office yesterday and my friend Rhonda stopped me before I could make it down the hall. I plan to be on the lookout for another Kasper blazer in a bright color, perhaps red or yellow for the spring/summer.

Then and Now

 I am all about purchasing quality staple items and adding trends year after after for a complete wardrobe. I purchased these knit navy bootcut pants from NY&Co years ago. Last year I added this cardigan and wore it with a white button up shirt, a white tank, a white bow-tie shirt, and a white ruffle front blouse (pictured below). I know, I kept it pretty basic. This year, I wanted to switch it up with color and added this pink blouse and I must say that I like how the colors compliment each other.

Color Blocking: Black and Blue

Only in NC will it snow the end of March. Here's an outfit that I intended to post a few weeks ago when it was still cool, now that it's back to freezing outside I need a reminder of warmer weather.

It's casual Friday! Actually it's been casual week since UNC Greensboro is on spring break. Good thing for the students/faculty/staff who had an opportunity to get away because it has been cold and rainy. I am so ready to put the rest of my winter clothes away, but until the weather warms up I'm getting the last few wears out of my sweaters.

Here's an outfit that can easily be transformed from work to drinks with friends after 5 p.m. If you don't want to wear pumps to work, a black flat or wedge would also look great. I searched and searched for my red lipstick for Picture 2 but opted for this red purse, either one or both could give you that "It's the weekend! look.
