So another month of the Retail Rehab 2012 has come and gone and I'm not sure if was all the winter clearance sales or the overflow of end of the year donations at Goodwill, but I really struggled this month.If you follow me on Twitter, you already know I really got discouraged and was about to give up during the last week of the month. I jumped on the cobalt blue bandwagon early simply because it's one of my favorite colors. I purchased this wool blazer in early fall from Goodwill, but really haven't worn it much until recently. I think colored blazers are a trend that's going to be in for a while. So far, I have red, yellow, and pink, but I'm on the look-out for orange and white. I'm not sure what brand his blazer is, but most of mine are Sag Harbor.

Yesterday, I traveled to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC to see the amazing Kierra "Ki Ki" Sheard in concert. This outfit was totally built around my earrings I got while thrifting Saturday. I originally had on a black dress, but changed into this outfit ten minutes before I walked out the door. Retail Rehab: #50DollarChallenge Lesson: USE COUPONS!!

My shopping this month has been slow and sporadic. My #50DollarChallenge has started off great but I am learning so much about my shopping and spending habits. I have been the "See, Like, Buy" shopper for so long that it's been really hard saying no and walking away. New York and Company is one of my weaknesses so I have avoided all temptation by not even going into the store since before the Christmas holiday (I still go online 2-3 times a week). I found a $10 Rewards coupon while cleaning that expired soon so I decided to stop in for a quick lunch trip. With $20 left in my January shopping budget and only 30 minutes to spare I didn't have time to try anything on, so I already knew I would be looking at accessories only. The scarf was regular price $19.95, but blue is my favorite color and I had so many ideas for it I decided to go for it. While waiting in line, I spotted an entire rack of accessories marked down to $1.99 and $2.99, so I grabbed a couple of must-haves. The only catch with the Rewards coupon is that I had to use my NY&CO Card. But I immediately paid the $15.54 I charged with cash to avoid overspending for the rest of the month. Now next month is going to be tough with spring items hitting the stores and so many bright colors to choose from, but I think I'm up for the challenge!

I had been meaning to remake this outfit for months now when this picture first surfaced on the web, but just got around to doing so this weekend. I absolutely love dressing up on the weekends. Although working in higher education allows me to have some creative professional style freedom, there are some looks that I would never wear to work. I was having a TWA (teeny weeny afro) bad hair day and decided to rock the turban look before my hair appointment later in the day. I'm still going back and forth with whether or not to get a frohawk. Every time that I have my mind made up, I change my mind when I get in the barber's chair.

I have officially started Retail Rehab $50 a month challenge with my first purchases of the new year!! My first stop was Triad Goodwill and it was one of those rare occasions where I put together an entire outfit in the same shopping trip.

If you haven't stopped by your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other thrift store that accepts donations make sure that you find some time to do so in the next few weeks. Stores are usually overflowing this time of year with end of the year donations.

The weather has been so up and down in NC lately that I ended up switching out the turtleneck for a brown short-sleeved short, but looks were great for the weekend.

I know I'm a few days late, but as you can see from my last couple of posts, my laptop was acting crazy resulting in some crappy photos. My first day back at work was yesterday and I just got my laptop back today, yayyy! After reaching the spending limit in my Retail Rehab $50 a month spending challenge for December, I didn't do much shopping during the holiday break. I did a little window shopping and shopped for Camden to curb temptation, but I'm gonna be honest, this is going to be one long year.

It seems like every year for the past 5 years I have received a scarf/glove or scarf/hat set that I've exchanged for something that I really liked or needed (sssh, don't tell anybody). This year was no different. I headed to SteinMart and found this cute belted sweater on clearance (and I still have a store credit left). I finally had the chance to wear my one and only Black Friday purchase, boots, and they are oh so comfy.

I haven’t been out and about on New Year’s Eve since 2004. I never meant for it to be that long, but I’ve spent the past 7 years either in church or at home when the clock struck midnight. I’m still finalizing plans to bring in 2012, but I just kept coming back to this gold H&M dress last week while finishing up my Christmas shopping for Camden last week. The dress was on clearance for only $5 from it's original $24.95 price. My shopping buddy purchased it for me for Christmas and had the cashier cracking up with “Most value meals at McDonald’s cost more than this dress”. I was thankful because I was already over my $50 Retail Rehab budget. I put together a couple of potential options depending on where I end up this New Year's Eve.

Here’s the dress. It’s simple, a little sheer and clingy, but cute with the right body shaper:

HOUSE PARTY

I added a black shrug, black platform sandals, and accessories for a simple, elegant look. If you are cold natured like me, you could also add some black tights and black booties.

NIGHT OUT

I added black leggings, black and gold platform pumps, and accessories. Slightly off the shoulder and a red lips gives the dress a super sexy look.

PRAISE AND WORSHIP

I added a black blazer and black pumps. This look would also work with a black or red bootie, but I went with a red lip. A red purse would also dress this outfit up.

RETAIL REHAB: $50 a month on clothes, shoes, and accessories! I went back and forth ever since I posted about a potential challenge for 2012 after my trip to Chicago in early November. My first idea was $500 a year, which was around $42 a month. Then I stumbled across Living Fly on a Dime’s Thrifty Threads Challenge, Part II. I absolutely love thrifting, but I already knew that I couldn’t commit to only shopping thrift for an entire year. I can find some really good deals on clearance and I have got to have my New York and Company fix every once in a while. I had to give this challenge a test run before I fully committed for an entire year. I really surprised myself! I couldn’t believe that I got so many items for just $50, but I learned a few lessons very early:

1. Cash Only. The first thing I did to prevent overspending and also to help track my purchases was to start with $50 cash in an envelope. Under no circumstances could I swipe my debit or credit cards. I even took my store credit cards out of my purse to curb temptation. There were a few times that I didn’t write down exactly what I purchased and had to go rummaging through my closet to figure out what “Ladies Short Sleeve” or “Skirt Short” that was listed on my receipt.

2. Pace Yourself. After spending over half my budget by 12/9, I had to slow down and pace myself to make through the end of the month. One of the best times to thrift is the last few weeks of the year and the first week of January after end of year donations. I made it up until a few days before Christmas.

3. Shop Strategically. I already somewhat shopped strategically for specific wardrobe essentials, but I would still purchase items out of season and without having a specific outfit in mind. Not anymore, I had to leave a few great items behind on a few shopping trips, but it’s going to be worth it (I really hope so).

Every year Camden and I have this ongoing battle over winter accessories. He lost not one, but two sweatshirts in October (before it even really got cold in NC, just this week the weather was in the 60's). A few weeks ago we were shopping in Target and he reminded me that he needed gloves for an upcoming ice skating trip. Of course, he picked out the fingerless gloves that were $4.99, not expensive I know, but knowing the likelihood that I would be being like 3 sets I said no, we'll make some. So I grabbed a set of 2 pairs of black gloves and let him pick out a pair of printed gloves. I cut the tip off of the printed gloves and the kid was happy! His trip is today and guess what, he can't find the gloves!!

I don't think I have ever posted an outfit the same day, but something about this outfit this morning when I looked in the mirror said "Go Got 'Em!" I really should have worn heels today, but I compromised cute for comfort and put on my favorite Life Stride patent flats (don't judge). Most people would be excited about the opportunity to wear jeans to work, but for me it's harder to put together casual outfits. I feel like I struggled earlier in the week (I didn't even take outfit pics Monday and Tuesday) but finally pulled it together today.

This outfit was truly inspired by this scarf that I purchased from NY&CO last year. I've worn it quite bit with black. I found the NY&CO sweater in Goodwill earlier this year, but I've worn it like once or twice with the scarf. All together with my NY&CO bright red skinny jeans, all the pieces fell into place, including my photo shoot this morning outside the Gatewood Studio Arts Building at UNC Greensboro. I've take a few blog pictures here, but this morning the sun was shining at the perfect angle. It's feeling like a GREAT DAY!

I love New York and Company for a few reasons:

1. Their clothes are simple and timeless. Even if I thrift something that's a few years old it usually fits right into my current wardrobe.

2. Fit. I can't say enough about the fit of NY&CO, especially their pants.

3. Cost. With the right coupon and the right sale, I can usually go in NY&CO and really rack up on some wardrobe staples.

4. Professional Trends. Somehow NY&CO takes fashion trends and make them appropriate for young professionals.

FYI - Not every outfit has made it to the blog this year for whatever reason. Every week, I plan to take a look back at some outfits that didn't make the cut before and post it. If I wore it, I have to be comfortable enough to share it.

Who said you can't be sexy in a turtleneck? The look and the feel of this shirt caught my eye as I was headed to check out. I didn't even try it on, I knew it was a must have for my wardrobe. But I wasn't quite sure what to wear with it. I feel like I've overdone animal print and red, but said oh well and went for it anyway. The outfit was complete with the camel cape. I'm thinking maybe next time I will pair it with a pencil skirt for a super sexy look.

Looking back, while editing my pictures I would like to thank my mama for some good genes!! I didn't realize I wasn't wearing a stitch of makeup when I was taking pics, but my skin looks flawless. I try to drink at least a few glasses of water daily, but other than that I don't have a routine, it's all natural.

After Thanksgiving, I decided to commit to my annual weight loss/work out New Year's Resolution prior to the new year. One of my biggest excuses for not working out is not having the appropriate workout attire, especially during the fall/winter. I headed to Triad Goodwill to only look for a black hoodie. Well, I found a hoodie for $3.75 and a few more shirts and sweaters. I also did something I don't usually do, wore everything I bought in the same week, more posts coming this week.

I'm trying to incorporate more prints into my wardrobe and this Talbot's print shirt does just the thing. The pics don't do the color justice. My nude pumps need to be taken to the shoe shop (already) to have the heel tap replaced so I had to pull these Gianni Binni Shoes out the closet. I probably on wear them twice a year because they aren't that comfy, but they are too cute to part with just yet.

I can't tell you just how much I love my red blazer. I've worn it at least once a week since finding it in Goodwill a while back. I've only worn this dress twice in the past year. I even almost gave it to one of my friends a few weeks ago when she borrowed it to wear to a wedding. After she returned it I hung it in the closet next to my red blazer and BAM! an outfit idea was born. After searching the web trying to figure out if red and camel really matched, I added the animal scarf. I've been looking for a pair of brown booties and still hadn't found any yet so I wore this outfit with some nude pumps, they were ok (so I just edited them out the photos).

One thing I love about UNCG during this time of year is all of the holiday socials! Undergraduate Student Excellence kicked off the holiday season with an Open House a few weeks ago. First, I noticed Melanie, and undergraduate intern for Student's First, was wearing an animal print scarf as a headband (I was always a little to scared to try this trend when I had an afro). Later in the day I realized that Brandy, the new Coordinator of Academic Foundations (Congrats Brandy!) was also wearing red and animal print. D'Andre from Special Support Services added some red to the mix. I guess great minds really do think alike!

NATURAL HAIR VENT

I will be the first to admit that I am not the best person to talk to when it comes to natural hair. My first big chop wasn't that drastic, I went from maybe 2 inches of relaxed hair to a brush cut. My second big chop, after growing my hair for two years, was a bit more traumatic. But I'm one of those people that hair isn't a big deal (as long as it looks nice). I recently had to step in and intervene with one my best friends who's been transitioning for a while now. She's been natural before but it was a long time ago and she didn't want to cut her hair off again. Here's the advice I had to offer: "No matter what you decide to do; big chop, transition with braids, weaves, or protective styles, don't go around looking a mess. Natural hair doesn't mean NO maintenance, you still have to do SOMETHING to your hair. Educate yourself! YouTube was my main go-to-guide for a while. Surround yourself by other natural hair sisters. This journey is different for us all so we have to support one another, even those who decide to go back to the creamy crack (I'd be lying if I say I didn't think about it). And trust, you will have those days when you are like WTH! I wasn't totally happy with my haircut in these pics, I had let my hair grow a bit and had just a little too much cut off when I finally went to the barbershop, but it's hair IT GROWS BACK." My friend has since followed my advice and cut her hair and I must say her swagger is back on a 100 Thousand Million!

A few weeks ago I took a chance and went shopping at Old Navy during the 75% off adult outerwear event with my 8 yr old son, Camden. We started out at the smaller Old Navy on Friendly Avenue around 11 am. The crowds weren't too bad but they didn't have the coat I was looking for in my size so we headed over to the Old Navy on Wendover Ave. What the heck was I thinking?? The store was packed! People had obviously been camped out there all morning. One lady had at least 10 coats in her cart. We picked out a coat for me and couple of coats for Christmas gifts and then headed to the clearance section since it was an additional 20%. By the time we made it out of the fitting room and in line, the line was wrapped around the store. Thank goodness Camden was comic relief and not complaining. I didn't take pictures until later on that evening and he was still in playful mode and kept jumping in pictures. I love that kid!

Last week while in Chicago for CAEL Conference 2011, I ventured down to State St. to do some shopping. A few hours and I don't remember how many stores later I found an ohsocute camel cape in Nordstrom's Rack. A cape was definitely on my fall wish list, but I just couldn't find the right fit or color in my size. After trying on several I knew I wanted one with sleeves. This was the one and only item I purchased! (I made a brief trip to the mall earlier in the week and found a few things at Target)

I couldn't believe it myself, I went in H&M, American Apparel, NY&CO, and didn't buy a thing, tried on a few things and left empty handed. I guess I will have to admit, THRIFTING has forever changed my life. I've been a frugal retail shopper since my brief summer stint a Goody's Family Clothing. If you've ever worked in retail you understand my reasons, an item comes in the store at full retail price, two week later it's 20% off, 4 weeks later it's 50%, throw in a coupon and you can possibly walk out the store with an item for practically free. But thrifting has taken my frugal shopping to another level, and has me thinking about a few challenges for 2012:

1. $500-2012 Shopping Budget Challenge

Yes, $500 for the entire year! That's roughly $42 a month! I think I can do it, I could 5-10 items from Goodwill for $42. But as much as I love to thrift I will occasionally get the department bug and have to buy something brand new. The goal is to use the extra money on a real vacation!

2. 5 Days a Week Sweater Challenge

My sweater/cardigan collection will surely rival Bill Cosby's. I tried on a few sweaters in H&M but remembered that I don't have any room for another one. So I'm thinking, until I wear every sweater in my closet I can't buy another one. I don't know how long this is gonna take but I'm already thinking about the sweaters I'm gonna miss out on during after Christmas sales.

Every once in a while I get the opportunity to go thrifting with my girl Briana and our boys at Goodwill on N. Elm. I know they hate to see us walk in the door because we usually spend about an hour catching up in between yelling at the boys running throughout the store. I wasn't totally in love with this shirt until Briana said "Girl, that looks like something from the motherland! All you need is a black fist and pick!" (She cracks me up on a regular). The colors are even more impressive in person, but nothing compared to the explosion of fall colors a few weeks ago in NC. I started a photography class last month taught by Dan Smith and I am learning so much about how to take my pictures to photographs. I had been trying to get the perfect shot of this tree in Foust Park for weeks. After taking Dan's advice I was able to get these shots in like 10 minutes. I noticed today this tree is now bare, guess I will have to take some pictures playing in the leaves this week!

I didn't realize until I started writing this post that I'm wearing all Target brands today! I love me some Target especially when I can find Target new stock at Goodwill. I purchased the sweater dress earlier this year and I must say that I have come a long way in just a few months. And that hair, YIKES! No wonder the original picture never made the blog!

I've always been confident in my personal style, but blogging has made me step my game up and often step outside of my box. I probably never, never would have purchased a bright red blazer (look at long it took me jump on the red jeans bandwagon), but I've been searching for the perfect one for a few months now. Every time I thought I found the right one it was too big, too small, or just not the shade of red that I was looking for.

I finally found the perfect red blazer on a Goodwill shopping trip during lunch at the newest Triad Goodwill location,106 Muirs Chapel Road. I love a quick middle of the day shopping trip, but it always seems like my time is so short. My new, favorite red blazer was in heavy rotation last weekend at East Carolina University's Homecoming (I didn't take not one outfit picture! What was I thinking) and so far has received a ton of compliments. I picked up the Merona Booties on the way to ECU with an impromptu stop in Target to grab some Mike and Ikes for the long drive to Greenville, NC. I was surprised to still see a few Missoni items in the Targets in Burlington, NC and Wilson, NC, guess folks in the country had no idea that Missoni for Target was a big deal.

A few weeks ago, The Fashionista Next Door posted a picture of Sweet Caroline in the City on Twitter that made me jump up and immediately head into my closet to recreate this look. The weather has still been mild in NC so I've just been waiting for the temperature to drop so that I could debut this outfit. I really love this look! I'm on the hunt for some thrifted shooties/booties but until I find a pair this outfit was work appropriate with a classic pump. I'm still hanging on to my red OPI O'Hare & Nails Look Great manicure from homecoming, a perfect compliment to black/white you've seen before. When I purchased this skirt over the summer, I never imagined that I would be able to transition it to a fall/winter look. I'm a southern girl who has been taught to never wear white after Labor Day or before Easter. Well, some rules are meant to broken (just don't tell my mama)!

I am not a huge fan of the rain for several reasons, but one is that I have to take pictures inside. The lighting inside my house isn't the greatest, but today I had my first photography class with Dan Smith, the photographer in UNCG's Teaching and Learning Center and I'm super excited about using some of his tips to make my pictures look better and take them from just pictures to photographs. The scarf was a recent addition to my scarf collection, but everything else had been in my closet for a while. I love the color of the GAP sweater I got from Goodwill back in the spring but it's a cashmere blend and sheds on everything it touches. And yes I am dancing in the first picture (I don't remember what song I was dancing to but I start my mornings off listening to gospel/rhythm and praise).

My worst fear came true at work today. I try not to repeat outfits often but after going through two outfits this morning I grabbed a repeat outfit from just a few days ago. Well, it isn't the EXACT same outfit. The same week I found my red skinny jeans from Forever 21 I lucked up and found these red wool trousers at Goodwill. I love the vintage look and feel of this outfit. I'm wearing my prescription glasses in today, but I feel like some vintage over sized glasses would take this outfit to another level. My weekend was fun-filled and action packed as I celebrated the Greatest Homecoming on Earth. I attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University for graduate school and have participated in homecoming activities for a few years now, but this weekend was the absolute best homecoming experience to date. My weekend started with a day party (my first ever). I had so much fun! I ran into a few people from East Carolina University (where I began my undergraduate journey) and even some folks that I grew up with. Anyone who's ever been to an HBCU event knows that it's like one big fashion show, so I had to step my game up. I waited a little late to jump on the red skinny bandwagon and had the hardest time finding some in my size. I finally found these a few weeks ago during a Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, NC shopping trip. I only had a few things on my wishlist: shoes for Camden, red skinny's, leopard. I tell ladies all the time, don't get caught up in sizes, fit is more important. But I was a little annoyed that these pants were labeled plus size when they are actually women's size.

Saturday kicked off with family time at the parade and Aggie Fan Fest. The parade begins at 8 am and I have yet to make it on time. It was still chilly that early in the morning so I grabbed my trench and Nine West boots. Aggie Fan Fest is packed with food, vendors, and activities for the kids. The big thing this year were "Basketball Wives" earrings. I almost got a pair for $10 but figured I could make them myself for a lot cheaper. I just have to find the time to make it the craft store.

After spending all morning with the kids, I headed home for a quick wardrobe change for the Aggie Tailgate. This year you had to purchase a game ticket in order to tailgate. At first I was like, it's not that serious, I've never been to an Aggie tailgate, but I am so glad I was persuaded otherwise. There was so much food! I ate like three plates and prayed that I would fit into my dress later on. The fedora was a last minute, on my way to the stadium, made a quick stop at Walmart purchase. I had been waiting for this hat to go on sale (It was only $8 regular price, but who buys anything at regular price these days).

Homecoming came to an end Saturday night at the A-List Black Hollywood party. We were on VIP status this year!! I pulled this dress out of the closet from an early spring Sear's shopping trip. I didn't take not one picture of my shoes that I purchased at Plato's Closet for only $14, but I plan to dedicate an entire post to them soon. I had so much fun doing the Wobble, dancing to ole school hip hop, and just hanging out with the girls. I'm looking forward to GHOE 2012 already.

I was moving a little slow so I had to throw on these leggings and a t-shirt to walk Camden to the bus stop. After getting him off to school safely I came home and went through a few outfits before pulling out this Miss Tina tunic. I purchased it a while back and hadn't found just the quite look until today. I would probably never wear this outfit to work again, but UNCG is on Fall Break making this the perfect lounge outfit.

GHOE: Mary Mary Concert Outfit

Every since I started thrifting a few years ago, my shopping experiences have just not been the same. I try and try to shop in some of my favorite retail and department stores but the price and sale has to be just right. One of my favorite stores of all time is New York and Company. When I catch a sale and have a coupon I am just too excited. I popped into NY&CO on my lunch break and while back and caught one of their 70% off redlines sales. I can't believe this sweater was on clearance, I don't remember ever seeing it on display or on the website but it's perfect for this mild fall weather we are having in NC right now.

I wore this outfit yesterday to kick-off the Greatest Homecoming on Earth (#GHOE) at NC A&T State University. AGGIE PRIDE! This year Mary Mary, two of the most stylish ladies in gospel, headlined the gospel concert. It was amazing! I loved all the fashion from the students who attended (although a few outfits were more club appropriate than gospel concert appropriate) to Erica and Tina looked who looked great from head to toe. Erica had on this too cute sequined top that makes me want to jump on the sequin bandwagon, like today.

I spent my Labor Day weekend putting away some of my summer clothes (it's still hot in NC) and realized it had been way too long since I had done a Wardrobe Remix.

What's a Wardrobe Remix?

We begin with Personal Style Questionaire, followed by a 2-3 hour Closet Purge in your home. The closet purge involves going through every item in your closet deciding what stays, what goes, and what you need (don't worry I won't make you get rid of that sweater you've been holding on to since 1991-just please don't ever wear it again). After taking inventory of what's left, we put together at least 10-15 new outfits with what you have! It's like going shopping in your closet.

Back in May, during my last H&M Shopping Spree I tried on a pair of harem pants and regretted not buying them ever since. I was not making the same mistake twice when I went shopping over the weekend. First of all, I don't know what I was thinking going to the mall on tax free weekend! But in the end, it was soo worth it because I found 2 pair of harem pants and Camden some fly sneakers for less than $35. I am really surprised by this outfit, I was a little nervous to wear such a bold print to work, but paired with a neutral top I guess it is possible to be printed and professional. I have a few ideas for these pants, so stay tuned for a possible 1 Pair of Pants, 3 Looks post! The new eye wear were a gift and really finished off the outfit. Until recently, I had no idea what Carrera's were, but they do look good on me!

Confession: These pants are from H&M's Mama Maternity Line. Now as someones mama and I have no idea why these pants are maternity because they are 100% Viscose, the only stretch is the elastic waistband. They fit and they don't have that huge belly band that most maternity pants have, so a great addition to the wardrobe (even if I'm not expecting, and I'm definitely NOT).

I really thought that I just couldn't pull off the jumpsuit look with my body type. Sherita's getting married!! And I was super excited when I received an invite to her "Tea Party" themed bridal shower! The skirt and white sandals were a Goodwill find a month ago and were perfect! Now the hat, let's talk about it. I bought the blue hat from Maxway for only $6 and loved the look, but it just didn't give the outfit the pop I was looking for. I borrowed the white veiled hat the day before the bridal shower from my friends mother, and also loved the look (I am loving all things vintage lately), but again it just didn't give the outfit that pop I was looking for. The day of the bridal shower, with two hours to spare, I decided to venture out and find the perfect hat in my IMPR(4L)ess budget! I ended up at Dots, the first hat I tried on was ok, then I tried on this one. One of the cashier's stopped stocking earrings and exclaimed, "That's cute, buy it, like right now!" Another customer asked, "Are you gonna wear it with what you have on?" Another customer walked up, sooo you get where I'm going . . . I purchased the hat, declined a bag, ripped off the tags, put it on my head, and went to the bridal shower. I had so much fun! Now I have to figure out what to wear to the wedding in a few weeks, maybe Black and White?

Another Hair Journey!?!

I love my natural hair!! I've been through several phases of not liking how my hair was looking on this natural hair journey, but I really love being natural. I have no plans of ever returning to a relaxer and the few times that I've straightened my hair only lasted a few days. I love short, natural hair!! I really feel like short, natural hair is my signature look. I feel so sexy and confident with short hair, minimal make-up, and big earrings. BUT when I recently (less than 3 months ago) decided to cut my hair again after two years of growing it out, I never imagined that I would be embarking on yet another hair journey this soon.

May 12th - I cut my hair into what was supposed to be a frohawk.

May 14 -I woke up a few days later after my haircut and totally hated it! I returned to the barbershop and got my hair cut down to less than an inch on top.

June 2 - While I loved the new look, I longed for the Big Chop #1 look, "the brush cut". I went to a new barbershop (huge mistake!!) and got my hair cut back down only to discover several (5 to be exact) bald patches throughout my scalp. I was more upset at the fact that I told the barber about a bald spot that I had in the middle of my head (it's been there forever, not sure where it came from) and he didn't even say a thing about the others, my son informed as we were walking to the car. The next day I sat in the salon and fought back tears when my stylist and a barber from the adjoining barber shop informed that the bald patches appeared to be stress related alopocia. I've been through some stressful work/life changes over the past few months, but enough to cause my hair to fall out, like really!! I went home and let it all out, cried about my hair, about my life, about everything and everyone that I had let worry up until this point.

July 23 - After almost 8 weeks without a haircut (2 shape-ups, can't be looking a mess), countless hours of searching the web and watching YouTube videos, I have decided to grow my hair out. I am not 100% stress free, but I've made an effort to pray more and worry less. I'm proud to say, the bald patches are growing in (still a little thin, but at least it's growing). I kept coming back to the vlogger who prompted me to cut my hair in the first place, after watching Sunshine's video (http://naturalsunshine.ning.com/), I've decided to grow my hair out with style!! I was so excited last week when I stumbled across a "Fashion Dare Tag" from Chica Fashion. White pants had been on my wish list for a while until recently, I found a pair of Banana Republic Trouser Pants at Goodwill and bought these jeans at New York and Company the same day they went on sale.

LOL, it took him calling his older sister to confirm that there was actually pants called "jeggings", why he didn't take my word for it I just don't know. I found these Faded Glory Black Denim Jeggings on clearance at Walmart for only $5!! I really wish they would have had more colors in my size, because I would have gotten them all.

Where did the time go? SOAR Session 8 was last week and I only posted 4 outfits for my Blue and Gold Challenge! Now that SOAR is over, July is spent getting ready for August and the beginning of the Fall semester. This outfit is probably my favorite. White jeans have been on my wish list for a while and I absolutely love these skinny fit ankle jeans, they're perfect for the summer.

I don't ever remember seeing this shirt the many times that I've looked through Miss Tina fashions in Walmart until now. Originally priced at only $15 it was definately a steal at only $7. I've said before, when it's 90 degrees outside, it's about 50 degrees in my office. This shirt is perfect for the transition from freezing cold to hot as all get out when I get off work. I also found a cute Miss Tina shirtdress from the spring that was originally $20 marked down to only $7 too, but that will be a weekend hopefully date night post.

Every once in a while walking across campus, I will see an undergraduate outfit that I think can be recreated for the grown and sexy. I really like the recent off the shoulder, blousy trend but rarely do I have the opportunity to get all dressed up. Last week I finally had a day off (even though I ended up in the office for about an hour-it's annual report time) and put this outfit together with some older items and recent purchases. I spent most of my day off thrifting with my sister and Camden. I came across a great sale at Plato's Closet, clearance was an additional 60%! My sister got a pair of NY&CO and Old Navy Jeans for only $15! I returned later that evening with some girls from work and got two rompers for only less than $10! My girl Brianna got the best deal of all with a romper and at least 6 summer dresses for her beach vacation for only $50, now you can't beat that!

I love, love, love my Miss Tina Maxi Dress! It is so comfy, The wide straps are perfect and it can be worn without a cami underneath (I didn't want to let the girls out at work, lol). Most maxi dresses are way too long, but I didn't have to get this one hemmed and I only wore a 1.5 inch wedge. I was a little apprehensive about the print, but I decided to go for it after some encouragement from my friend Rhonda (I also purchased the dress in black just in case). If you follow me on Twitter, you know that the Thrift Fairy came to visit twice last week! The Thrift Fairy is actually a few people at work who will occasionally gift me clothes and accessories (I ain't too good for some hand me downs), one of them saw me eyeing this handbag from her yard sale pile a while ago when I joined her for dinner. She surprised me this week and gave it to me. I have some really great friends.

I love this outfit, but looking back at the pictures I feel like it's missing something, a scarf, a necklace, some bangles, just something extra. Maybe it was because I was so excited about wearing the vintage earrings I purchased last week and thought they were just enough by themselves. Or maybe it was the NY&CO shirt, I gave away the exact same shirt a few years ago because it was too small (before I discovered shapewear), so when I saw this one during an impromptu lunch visit to Goodwill on High Point Road, of course I purchased it along with a few other great shirts to add to my wardrobe.

UNCG's Spartan Orientation, Advising ,and Registration (SOAR) began yesterday and will continue through August welcoming new students and their families to UNCG. For some reason, I am really excited about SOAR this year. Maybe it's because I'm working in a new office, Undergraduate Student Excellence or maybe it's the new fashion challenge I've decided to embark on. My office is involved in various activities throughout SOAR, so I plan to wear blue and gold (well, yellow) in a stylish, fashionable, trendy way (because ya'll know I only do t-shirts on game day). My Spring Color Blocking outfits will definitely be in rotation and I also hope to capture some fashionable blue and gold Spartans across campus.

So, remember way back when in early spring I did a Closet Purge and pulled out these shoes to be repaired? Well I'm glad you remembered because I almost forgot about my shoes being in the shop! I guess that's what happens when you have so many shoes. Well, Frank (I think that's his name) at Frank's Shoe Shop was only able to fix 3 pair, but I added another pair that were in my yard sale/give away basket (I had a change of heart). Getting your favorite shoes repaired is a lot cheaper than buying new shoes everytime the heel gets worn or the toe gets scuffed.

Independence Day is next month, but I've been wearing a lot of red, white, and blue or just blue and white lately. The Ann Taylor Blouse above and the Merona (Target) Tank are some of the fabulous finds from my best Goodwill Shopping Trip video. I had been searching and searching for a skinny red belt and finally found this one in the beauty supply store (or just "hair store" if you're country).

Now to these Banana Republic Pants, white pants have been on my thrift wish list for quite some time. Last week, one of my girls called me to meet her at my favorite Triad Goodwill location to help her decide on a few things she had picked out. We joke because my number 1 goal for her this year is to stop wearing juniors clothes all the time! After leaving the dressing room and with 15 minutes before the store closed, I headed to the pants and right there in front of me where these pants! I didn't even try them on before I purchased them. They are a perfect fit and are fully lined.

Now isn't that what IMPR(4L)ess is all about, finding quality name brand staple items at thrift and consignment price.

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing number of weddings and baby showers in my circle of friends, families, and coworkers. In my early twenties I remember saying that I would never attend another wedding until I was married. Now that I'm in my early thirties, I've totally thrown out that saying because there is nothing like a good wedding reception with good music and great cake! And when you've witnessed someone's love story, seeing the beginning of their lives together gives you hope that just maybe one day that could be you in that white dress saying "I do" to your best friend.

I can never decide what colors are appropriate to wear to spring/summer weddings. I don't want to be so over the top with color that I clash with the wedding colors or so dull and boring that I don't look cute when I take pictures with the bride. Lately, I've just kept it simple with black and white. It seems to be working for me so far at work and at weddings.

My Secret Obsession . . .Earrings

Back when I first starting wearing my hair short, I probably owned 5-10 pairs of earrings, just enough to fit into a small wooden jewelry box. After my first big chop, I became slightly obsessed with earrings, big and small. I purchased this earring holder last year from TJMaxx so that all of my earrings would be easily visible and accessible. It holds 56 pairs of earrings and I just discovered with my most recent purchase of earrings that it is already full! So it's either get rid of some earrings or buy another holder, I guess I will be stopping by TJMaxx one day this week.

Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe have become two of my favorite stores to shop for trendy earrings because their earrings are lightweight (I have an attached earlobe, so heavy earrings are not an option) and inexpensive. Earrings at Forever 21 range from $2.80-$7.80 and Charlotte Russe 2 for $8.

I found some fabulous vintage jewelry for less than $5 while shopping at the Indie Market for Downtown Greensboro First Friday. I am loving all of these pieces, but really I am in love with the black and gold earrings, so much so that I wore them all weekend. I really wish I would have purchased more items because I have to wait until the next First Friday to shop Carver Jewelry. They seem to have more of their expensive pieces and not even 1/4 of the items they had at the Indie Market on Etsy. The flower piece at the top is actually a scarf clip and ya'll know I love my scarves.

Goodwill Shopping Trip

It's Memorial Weekend, the official beginning of summer for most people. Retailers are all stocked up on shorts, sundresses, and sandals. Who's even thinking about buying jeans when it's 90 degrees outside? I am! Now is one of the best times of the year to stock up on jeans. Last year, I purchased several pairs of jeans during the fall and winter. Most of them were thrifted and ranged in price from $5-$15, which isn't that bad considering they were all name brand (GAP and Old Navy).

In the past couple of weeks I've found some great deals on jeans for myself and Camden. Last week, I purchased a pair of NY&CO Skinny Jeans, regular priced $49.95 for only $14.98. But the best deal of all was at the GAP Outlet Store at Tanger in Mebane, NC. The entire store was on sale this week and clearance was an additional 30% during my shopping trip. I am seriously thinking about going back this weekend to purchase another pair, one for heels/wedge and one hemmed for flats.

October is also a good time to buy jeans, if you are on a tight budget right now or planning for your upcoming summer vacations. Most retailers, are trying to get rid of all their leftover back to school stock (because of people like me who are shopping now for back to school).

There’s only one H&M in the entire state of NC, so I usually budget for the two to three times that I visit Raleigh to go shopping. The last time I shopped at H&M, the only thing that I purchased was a belt, so I was really looking forward to this shopping trip. The first section I headed to was little boys. I start school shopping now for the next school year, not in August. I’ve found that most Back to School sales, aren’t really sales at all, well not enough of a sale for me on my Impress for Less budget. Camden already has his own style so I was really taking a gamble shopping without him. I kept it simple with some basics that he’s gonna need, jeans and shorts. I also threw in a polo shirt, but he liked it, yeah!!

After finishing up in the little boys section, I headed over to women’s and accessories. I really liked a lot of the trendy items that you would find in the magazines but they were either out of my price range, not in my size, or the quality wasn’t great. I was totally disappointed in the accessories and shoes. I finally settled on a couple of basics, some tube tops, cardigans, and a summer dress. I tried on a pair of harem pants at the request of another UNCG fashionista Rhonda, but I just wasn’t feeling them. I was going to buy them but they weren’t on sale yet so I didn’t get them. Rhonda kept saying that I was gonna regret not getting them and she was right, all I keep thinking about is those darn pants. I may have to make a road trip to back to Raleigh sooner than I planned.

If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter (@impr4less), you already know that I was shopping at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, NC earlier this week. I was in the mall less than 30 minutes and had already purchased these shoes. I actually saw them online while looking for another pair of nude wedges that were no longer unavailable in Greensboro. These shoes are HOTTTT! They are so comfortable and were so worth $29.99 (original price $79).

I am always amazed when I look back at pictures from the beginning of IMPR(4L)ess and now. I was pretty confident with my sense of style, but blogging about personal style and fashion has really made me step my game up. Besides my hair, the most noticeable differences are my waistline and hips. You already know that I'm wearing a bodyshaper (The shapewear post is almost done) but I really like how these skinny pants make me look SKINNY! I can't believe that I've been totally against skinny jeans for so long.

I guess you could say that I went on a shoe shopping spree this month because just last weekend purchased these Charlotte Russe pumps. I finally got out of the house for more than shopping with a much needed girl’s night of dinner and dancing. I wasn’t excited about my outfit at all (I actually wore this outfit to Crabtree Valley Mall, I didn't even take pictures of the going out outfit). I stopped by Plato’s Closet on my way to dinner hoping to find some accessories to spice it up. Instead of finding jewelry, I found these brand new Charlotte Russe shoes! Now these are definitely 2 hours shoes and didn’t make it for dancing, but they are too cute for only $15. Girl's night definitely made me realize my lack of casual going out clothes. I have plenty dresses, but they were a little too dressy for the club we went to, like I need another reason to go shopping.

Who is that crazy lady taking pictures in Walmart?!?

Oh it's just me. More Miss Tina by Tina Knowles (yep, Beyonce's mama) has arrived at Walmart on Cone Blvd and Walmart on S. Elm-Eugene in Greensboro. Everything is under $20 and sizes range from XS(2/4) to 2XL (18/20). There are quite a few items that are on my summer wardrobe wishlist, but I will definitely be getting this maxi dress and maybe another dress that I just saw this weekend. I first featured Miss Tina for Walmart back in January with my homecoming dress and again in March with a few items I purchased for the spring. What I love about Miss Tina is of course the cost and the quality of the items. Don't fret if you don't live in NC, you can search online for a Walmart in your area that sells Miss Tina and limited items are also available online at walmart.com.

Last week, I posted pictures of the $6 summer dresses that I purchased at Maxway, but here’s how you can take one of the dresses from weekend to work with just a few quick and easy changes:

1. Out Shopping

This is a simple weekend, going shopping look. I paired the dress with a body shaper tank and flip flops. It's easy to slip in and out of when I’m trying on clothes and I'm already wearing a shaper so I know how new clothes will fit.

2. Date Night

I pulled the dress down to show the body shaper tank underneat. Then, I folded the top half of the dress inside (it's elastic making it easy to fold) and tucked in the straps. Finally, I added a wide belt, accessories, and GUESS platform pumps, now I’m ready for a date with my guy or drinks with the girls.

3. Work

I had been eyeing a similar short-sleeved jacket at NY&CO, but before I could buy it, it went on clearance and I could no longer find it in my size. I added a skinny blue belt, simple accessories, and switched out the GUESS pumps for classic Nine West Pumps for a more professional look.

How many times have you had discussions with your mothers, aunts, or girlfriends about dressing your age? Did it begin in middle school or high school when you wanted to look older or maybe after college when you were still trying to look young? What does it really mean to “dress your age”? For me personally, it means to dress like a mother, a professional, a well put together, I feel good about myself ALL the time, confident, keeping it sexy, young woman. I’ve noticed lately that a lot of women my age (25-35) are still caught up in shopping in the juniors section. I’m not saying never buy another juniors items, but really after 25, your entire wardrobe should NOT consist primarily of juniors.

My Transition from Juniors to Misses

Up until about 25, I was a 3/4- 5/6, even after Camden, I was around a 9/10. I really had no other choice but to shop in the juniors section because misses clothes just didn’t fit quite right. Extra smalls were too little and smalls were baggy in the wrong places. I worked as a server/bartender through college and wore the same outfit to work every day so my mindset about clothes was to purchase outfits for occasions; homecoming, road trips, girl’s night, date night, etc. My budget was also much different through college. I used my student refund check to pay my rent up for several months and I always had extra cash in my pocket (one of the many perks I miss about waiting tables).

When I started working at UNCG full-time, I had just turned 26 and was one of the youngest people in my office. I soon realized that I had to step my style game up if I wanted to earn the respect of my colleagues and keep their respect with my hard work. My mindset about clothes began to shift from outfits to individual pieces. If I just had 5 pairs of pants, I could switch up my tops to make it seem like I had a lot more clothes in my wardrobe than I actually did. As my lifestyle changed; I was sitting at a desk M-F, 8-5 pm, in graduate school at night and in a new relationship, so did my weight, dramatically. Before I knew it I was an 11/12 and before going up to a 13/14 or 15/16, I made the decision to no longer shop in the junior’s section because a size 8/10 or S/M in women’s made me feel better about my size, Simple As That. My budget for clothes also decreased, without a refund check, I had to learn to pay rent, a car payment, and everything else with my once a month paycheck (no more tip money).

Other Reasons to Shop Misses

Quality, Quality, Quality – I have a mortgage, a car payment, and a son that will NOT stop growing, so I don’t have the money or the time to replace items every season, every year. It’s important to have quality wardrobe essentials. Misses clothes cost more, but they last longer.

Size and Fit – I work with undergraduate students and administrators at UNCG every day. I hardly ever have to worry about appropriate skirt length or my neckline being too low with misses.

Showcase Your Personal Style!

Dressing your age doesn’t have to be boring and old. I love earrings, shoes, and scarves because they offer endless possibilities for changing up an outfit. In the first picture I took a simple sweater twinset and added a belt and accessories to make it my own. I’m wearing heels to work, but could switch them out for flats to go to an afterschool program with Camden. In the second picture, I added a cute flat sandal to a simple sweater and khaki pants to make it young and fresh.

If you are a recent college graduate, fast approaching 30, or over 30 and still stuck in the juniors section, I challenge you to go to the misses section the next time you are out shopping. Take some time to try on a couple of things, a blouse, pants, and a dress. Look at the seams, the stitching, even the materials. Compare the items to your favorite juniors item. Still not convinced? I saw this shirt while shopping at the Goodwill Grand Opening last month and didn’t buy it at first because I wasn’t quite sure about the color scheme. Two days later I couldn't stop thinking about the shirt and how much I needed some color in my spring/summer wardrobe. So, I went back to Goodwill looking for it. Totally disappointed and about to give up when I didn’t find it among all the shirts, I went to try the things that I did find. As I left the fitting room, there it was, hanging on the rack outside the fitting room just waiting for me! It was meant to be!

If you have ever looked in your closet and said I have nothing to wear, then I'm telling you to look again! So many times we get caught up in outfits instead of separate pieces. I’ve had this leaf print dress and brown sandals for at least 2-3 years purchased on clearance from JC Penny. Here’s a few ideas I played around with to give the older items a new look with recent purchases (on my Impress for Less budget of course).

I love, love this look! But I definitely can NOT wear it to work. When it’s 70-75 degrees or above outside, it’s about 50-55 degrees in my office. Yesterday I wore layers, bundled up with a blanket and still felt like I needed some socks and a space heater. Whose idea was it to let some universal power control the air and heat in our building? I would most likely wear this outfit on a date, to a poetry event, or a night out with the girls (if we can ever find the time to have one).

Here's the dress by itself, simple cotton blend, v-neck, A-line. Nothing special to write home about.

This is how I’ve worn the dress in the past with a cardigan and a belt that I found at a beauty supply store. You would be surprised by what you can find at the “hair store”; sandals, belts, scarves, hats, and jewelry. Most items are under $20 (with the exception of some costume jewelry, specifically evening wear). In Greensboro, there seems to be a beauty supply store in every shopping center and I must add that some are better than others.

I don’t yard sale shop often, but community yard sales and/or annual, semi-annual events have the most potential to yield great finds.

This dress almost didn’t make the blog. It's been in my closet for over a year and I had only worn it once, so it was already in the “consignment” basket. When I purchased the leopard print scarf a few weeks ago I decided to give it a second chance and I’m sooo glad that I did. Here’s how this outfit came together:

1. What to Underwear

It’s getting warmer and the dresses are coming out, but ladies please, please make sure that you are wearing the right underwear/shapewear. Jersey knit shows every single lump and bump, so I usually wear a waist shaper thigh slimmer to keep the tummy and thighs smooth. I'm a little chunkier in the middle so I require an extra firm hold, but most ladies can go with a light to firm hold. Have no idea what I'm talking about . . . a shapewear post is coming soon.

Now, let's talk about the obvious . . . My HAIR! So, I decided to return to my extra short hair this weekend and I absolutely love it! I feel sexy, sassy, young, and confident with my new look. Will I ever grow my hair again, probably so, but not anytime soon. I had my hair cut last week into a funky, modern, sides-shaved, Rihanna-like style, but woke up Saturday morning looking like the lead singer from Cameo, LOL. Back to the barber shop I went. For only $12 total for both haircuts I think I did pretty good. Now, I just have to get back used to the barber shop chatter. Men are way worse than women in the salon.

I wore this outfit to church Sunday for Mother's Day. It's been a while since I've spent an entire weekend in my hometown, but this past weekend reminded me that I definitely need to do so more often. I went shopping with the girls from work last week and tried this hat on for fun, but my friend JD wouldn't let me leave the store without it. Thanks for the Mother's Day/Birthday gift! I like this outfit, but I don't really love it. I really wanted a blouse to wear with this skirt, but just haven't found one yet. Luckily, my mom had been thrift shopping the week before and this belt was one of her of her fabulous finds that gave it a little added flavor. I forgot to pack the shoes that I intended to wear and had to pull these pumps out of my yard sale/give away tote (that is still in the trunk of my car). Halfway through church I remembered why I had gotten rid of them, my feet were screaming "save me!" I had already went through my yard sale/give away tote Friday for an outfit to wear to my sister's graduation. I planned to just wear my Casual Friday outfit but changed my mind at the last minute when I saw my sister all dressed up. The dress ended up in the tote because it was a little tighter than I like. I borrowed the cardigan from a twin set my mom had just thrifted (I ended up keeping it along with a couple others) and added some shoes that were in my trunk that also happened to be a thrift gift from my mom and there you go!

That's Right! Brand New!

A few weeks ago I was reminded of how important it is to have the basic wardrobe essentials when I had to go all over town searching for a white shirt and black pants for Camden to wear to the Greensboro Boys and Girls Club Fundraiser Gala. It was a few more days until pay day and my shopping budget for the month was already gone so I had to dip into the emergency fund. While out shopping I found these dresses and thought to myself, this would be perfect for someone who needed an outfit immediately and didn't have a lot of time to search thrift and consignment shops, but also didn't have a whole lot of money to spend on an entire new outfit. I paired both of these dresses with items that I already in my closet. Some items were recent purchases (both pairs of shoes), but both cardigans I've had for at least a year now. I added some accessories (for less than $20 total) and created two great looks, now that's what IMPR(4L)ess is all about. I have a few more ideas for these dresses as the weather continues to warm up.

For those of you who have never heard of Maxway, it's comparable to Family Dollar, Super Dollar, or Dollar General. There are two in Greensboro, on Summit Ave and Randleman Road. Now the quality of these dresses, they will more than likely only last for one season with normal washing (but so do most items from Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe at double or triple the cost). From time to time Maxway also carries name brands from NY&CO to Faded Glory (Walmart). I've got Mecca, U.S. Polo Assn., and Point Zero for Camden and name brand men's dress shirts in the past. I've also known them to carry suits for men, women, and boys for $30. And if you are looking for a church hat, they have those too. Happy Shopping!

Happy Friday! Today you get 2for1, what I'm wearing today and an outfit that I wore a few weeks ago. Target is definately my go to place for trends each season, because they are inexpensive without the lack of quality like some stores. I had been checking out these shoes for at least a month before they finally went on clearance. My only regret is that I didn't get them in a fun color, leave it to me to keep it simple and basic. The same thing with this tunic, they had a few other colors in Goodwill, but I went with white. I'm stepping outside of my comfort zone more with bright colors and colorblocking, but at the end of the day you can count on me to stick to what I know! I'll save the fun colors for my nails!

I've always been a little apprehensive to experiment with animal prints. I keep thinking back to a few years ago when I purchased a snake print cardigan at New York and Company, wore it once, and almost couldn't give it away. I didn't want to make that mistake again, but it seems like leopard is a trend that comes back around more often. I tried on a leopard print blouse, skirt, and cardigan before I decided to buy this scarf and mix it with some things that I already had in my closet. Stay tuned for another edition of 1 Scarf, 3 Looks, I was orignally going to wear a dress today, but the weather in NC has decided to be a little too chilly for the legs to be out.

To My Best Friends

I finally had the chance to sit down and read through the May issue of ESSENCE Magazine, The Girlfriends Issue. I've always had a lot of friends, one of the rewards of being a high energy extrovert or in plain terms a social butterfly. But I only have a small group of best friends, sisters really, who have had my back through all of my many life changes. Shakira and I have been friends since we were 5 years old, I don't remember a time before I knew her. And while we are so different, we have remained close all these years, went to college together, and still keep in touch even though we are miles (a 12 hour drive) apart. We've only had one disagreement, in college over a boy, and didn't speak to one another for an entire year. When we finally reached out to each other it was like all the pieces fell right back into place. Shemia and I met during the rebellious years of high school working at Food Lion. She went to a rival high school, but they had a better football time so our friendship grew out of football games and after parties. I smoked my first cigarette with Mimi, went to my first concert (Super Jam!), and got my first body piercing (Senior Beach Week!). When I went away to college I remember us crying like babies. Over the years we have shared more tears but way more laughter.Standing by her side as she married her husband was one of those moments in life that I will never forget. In my mind, I was like "damn, i'm really doing the ugly cry!" but when you've been a best friend who've seen two people go through so much together and then come together in the name of love, well it's ok to do the ugly cry. And finally Jo'Vonia, my "bestie". We met in college, I don't exactly remember how or when but I have very few college memories without her. We kinda hung out and ran in the same circles for a while, but after she let me sleep on her couch one summer when I couldn't afford housing we became inseparable. Our relationship has grown as our life roles has changed from college students, to mothers (our son's are a couple of months apart), adult college students, and now for Jae, wife, but our friendship has remained solid. I am thankful and grateful for the many girls that I have my life, but to my best friends, Shakira, Shemia, and Jo'Vonia, I love you all like sisters. Thank you for always having my back!

IT'S JUST HAIR!

I almost didn't post this outfit because I was having a total bad hair day. I know that everyone has them, but for most naturals, it's even more of a challenge because people are already looking at you sideways for breaking away from the norm. Recently, I’m finding myself at the “now what” phase of my natural hair journey. Do I continue to let it grow, cut it off again, or begin the loc journey? I've been revisiting why I went natural in the first place in an effort to guide my decision . . .

-When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?

I big chopped in 2008. I tried to transition for a few months with weaves, but after battling the two very different textures of relaxed and natural hair I gave in, got a relaxer and a haircut. Two weeks later and already needing a touch up, my regular stylist refused to cut my off my relaxed hair. I went to Great Clips in my local Walmart and after an hour finally convinced the stylist to cut off ALL of my hair. Because I didn’t have any hair, my initial reaction was “Whoa, what have I done?” for the first few weeks. After getting my hair cut by an actual barber, I totally embraced the short cut. I went on an earring shopping spree for a few months to compliment my new look.

-How did family and friends react to the new you? What was your response to them?

My family and friends were totally shocked that I cut my hair. I had worn very short relaxed hair for a few years, but it still was shocking to most. My mom and my aunts amazingly loved it. My best friends hated it, but that was almost expected. I’ve always felt like hair is just hair, it will grow back. I’ve had every hairstyle from a jheri curl to a quick weave, so I just let the people who didn’t like my hair be entitled to their opinion and move on.

-Why did you choose to go natural?

I recently blogged about why I decided to go natural in my ALL Hair is Good post.

Initially, my reason for going natural was because I was looking for something that was both cost and time effective I would no longer have to spend time and money in the salon every other week. During the last few years of relaxed short hair, I was in the salon for at least 2 hours, every other week, and spending $50 per visit. After I big chopped, I would go to the barber shop in the morning for 30 minutes (this time varies depending on the time of day and day of the week) every other week, spending only $10 per visit!

-Why did you choose to grow your hair out?

I started out taking part in a grow out challenge in early 2009, but big chopped my hair again for my best friend’s wedding in April 2009. I almost wore a wig in her wedding, but instead embraced my bald head. I look back at the pictures and see self-confidence. After the wedding, I got one last haircut and have now been growing my hair out for two years. During the first year of growing out my hair, I only went to the salon twice for a deep conditioning treatment and to get my ends trimmed. Now that my hair is about 6-7 inches long, I still don’t frequent the salon regularly but I’ve tried different braided and two strand twist styles that have ranged from $20 to $50 per visit depending on where I go to get my hair done (someone’s kitchen, beauty school, or salon).

I'm not sure what the next phase of my natural hair journey will be but whatever I decide, IT'S JUST HAIR!

I admit, when I first starting consignment and thrift shopping I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing slightly worn shoes. I mean ewwwh someone else's feet had been in them. That was until I discovered shoe repair shops will not only repair shoes but also clean them up. These shoes are yet another great find from the new Goodwill at 3519 N. Elm St. The total price spent was $12.98! I have never seen any pair of GUESS shoes that cheap at a department store, on clearance, with a coupon, so I think I did pretty darn good!

This is the very first time that I've purchased an outfit during a Goodwill visit. I didn't even realize this tank and skirt matched until I tried them on in the dressing room. I will usually make my purchase and later at home figure out what I am going to pair it with. I forgot to mention in my Sunday Best post that the skirt was from the new Goodwill at 3519 N. Elm that just opened last week. I absolutely love this new store, not only because it's about 5 minutes from my house, but it's really nice. The store has a lot of Target new stock, especially household items. I saw everything from lamps and picture frames to air mattresses and cookware sets. The store also had some new clothing items from Target, but it was mainly items that were on clearance after the holiday that I didn't really like anyway. But I did purchase a 3-pack of Hanes boy shorts for me and Camden a 3-pack of boxers for only $2.99.

Today is the last day of the spring semester at UNCG. While I was taking pictures some students were literally HANGING OUT in Foust Park. Amazingly, I think they were actually studying (or so it seemed from their conversation).

I am back from Easter Break! I never intended to take a week from blogging, but my allergies got the best of me early last week and my planned break of 3 days turned into 9 days. I wore this outfit to church yesterday and only had a few minutes to snap some pictures so that I can finish Easter dinner. This is the first time ever that I've cook an entire holiday meal all by myself! I don't know how my mom does it! I was in the kitchen until midnight Saturday and another hour on Sunday finishing up . . . but it was delicious! The Menu: Ham, Chicken Wings, Mac and Cheese, Okra, Green Beans, Potato Salad, Croissant Rolls, Lemon Cake with Strawberries & Whipped Cream.

Greensboro Goodwill Grand Opening April 19th-23rd

I am so excited! Like, really excited! The the newest Triad Goodwill is finally opening in Greensboro at 3519 N. Elm St. The Goodwill location that I shopped the most closed a few months ago to make way for the opening of this new location which is just minutes from my house, near the intersection of Pisgah Church and N. Elm, across the street from the Harris Teeter and Ace Hardware stores shopping center (The Village at North Elm), behind Walgreens on the corner. Here's the address if my directions aren't good enough, lol.

Among the many things that I love about shopping at Goodwill is finding an item that I normally wouldn't buy in a department store without the buyer's remorse if I never wear it. A while ago, my friend Tamara and I spent a much needed girl's day thrifting and catching up (it's so time for another one). She picked out this blouse and suggested that I try it on. I didn't think it was really my style, but tried it on anyway and really liked it. I especially like the cutout detail in the back and when it's at least 60 degrees in the morning when I'm leaving the house, I plan to wear without a tank underneath. I've only been at work a few hours and have already received a few compliments. Good looking out Tamara! Now let's plan another girl's day!

The same thing happened with this sweater, when I first saw it last week in Goodwill, I skipped over it. After doing another walk-thru I decided to try it on and I really liked how it fit. But I like it, it's definitely a different look for me.

I can't believe it, look at who's featured in Fab Finds Under $50: April Outfit Inspiration Calendar! Kimberly is one of my favorite fashion bloggers and on those days when I really have no idea what I'm going to wear, I go to her inspiration calendars for some help. I posted this outfit in 1 Scarf, 3 Looks last month but finally had the opportunity to wear it today. It's still a little chilly in the morning here in NC, but by the time I'm headed home in the afternoon I will be taking this cardigan off.

This outfit is all New York & Company. I recently purchased a couple of orange items to add some color to my spring and summer wardrobe. I will say that the pictures just don't do the shade of orange justice, you have to see it in person to get the full effect.

Spring Is Here!

The weather has been so nice this past week in NC (with the exception of a few crazy storms), let's just hope that spring is here to stay. I'm finally getting the opportunity to wander around campus and take some pictures outside. One of the things that I absolutely love about UNC Greensboro's campus is all of the green spaces. One thing that I've learned about taking pictures on a college campus is to take them in the morning before students are out and about or in the late afternoon when students are returning to their dorm rooms or leaving campus.
