Keeping it Simple

George (Walmart) Cardigan, NY&CO Ruffle Shirt, The Limited Pants, Life Stride Wedge Flats

IT'S JUST HAIR!

I almost didn't post this outfit because I was having a total bad hair day. I know that everyone has them, but for most naturals, it's even more of a challenge because people are already looking at you sideways for breaking away from the norm. Recently, I’m finding myself at the “now what” phase of my natural hair journey. Do I continue to let it grow, cut it off again, or begin the loc journey? I've been revisiting why I went natural in the first place in an effort to guide my decision . . .

-When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?
I big chopped in 2008. I tried to transition for a few months with weaves, but after battling the two very different textures of relaxed and natural hair I gave in, got a relaxer and a haircut. Two weeks later and already needing a touch up, my regular stylist refused to cut my off my relaxed hair. I went to Great Clips in my local Walmart and after an hour finally convinced the stylist to cut off ALL of my hair. Because I didn’t have any hair, my initial reaction was “Whoa, what have I done?” for the first few weeks. After getting my hair cut by an actual barber, I totally embraced the short cut. I went on an earring shopping spree for a few months to compliment my new look.
-How did family and friends react to the new you? What was your response to them?
My family and friends were totally shocked that I cut my hair. I had worn very short relaxed hair for a few years, but it still was shocking to most. My mom and my aunts amazingly loved it. My best friends hated it, but that was almost expected. I’ve always felt like hair is just hair, it will grow back. I’ve had every hairstyle from a jheri curl to a quick weave, so I just let the people who didn’t like my hair be entitled to their opinion and move on.
-Why did you choose to go natural?
I recently blogged about why I decided to go natural in my ALL Hair is Good post.
Initially, my reason for going natural was because I was looking for something that was both cost and time effective I would no longer have to spend time and money in the salon every other week. During the last few years of relaxed short hair, I was in the salon for at least 2 hours, every other week, and spending $50 per visit. After I big chopped, I would go to the barber shop in the morning for 30 minutes (this time varies depending on the time of day and day of the week) every other week, spending only $10 per visit!
-Why did you choose to grow your hair out?
I started out taking part in a grow out challenge in early 2009, but big chopped my hair again for my best friend’s wedding in April 2009. I almost wore a wig in her wedding, but instead embraced my bald head. I look back at the pictures and see self-confidence. After the wedding, I got one last haircut and have now been growing my hair out for two years. During the first year of growing out my hair, I only went to the salon twice for a deep conditioning treatment and to get my ends trimmed. Now that my hair is about 6-7 inches long, I still don’t frequent the salon regularly but I’ve tried different braided and two strand twist styles that have ranged from $20 to $50 per visit depending on where I go to get my hair done (someone’s kitchen, beauty school, or salon).
I'm not sure what the next phase of my natural hair journey will be but whatever I decide, IT'S JUST HAIR!

GUESS at Goodwill!?!

NY&CO Knit Dress
George (Walmart) Cardigan
GUESS Platform Pump - Goodwill [$4]
Frank's Shoe Repair [$8.98]

I admit, when I first starting consignment and thrift shopping I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing slightly worn shoes. I mean ewwwh someone else's feet had been in them. That was until I discovered shoe repair shops will not only repair shoes but also clean them up. These shoes are yet another great find from the new Goodwill at 3519 N. Elm St. The total price spent was $12.98! I have never seen any pair of GUESS shoes that cheap at a department store, on clearance, with a coupon, so I think I did pretty darn good!

Green with Envy

Ann Taylor Loft Tank - Goodwill [$3.75]
Ratio by Liz Claiborne Skirt - Goodwill [$3.75]
George (Walmart) Cardigan
Apostrophe (Sears) Belt
Worthington (JC Penny Sandal

This is the very first time that I've purchased an outfit during a Goodwill visit. I didn't even realize this tank and skirt matched until I tried them on in the dressing room. I will usually make my purchase and later at home figure out what I am going to pair it with. I forgot to mention in my Sunday Best post that the skirt was from the new Goodwill at 3519 N. Elm that just opened last week. I absolutely love this new store, not only because it's about 5 minutes from my house, but it's really nice. The store has a lot of Target new stock, especially household items. I saw everything from lamps and picture frames to air mattresses and cookware sets. The store also had some new clothing items from Target, but it was mainly items that were on clearance after the holiday that I didn't really like anyway. But I did purchase a 3-pack of Hanes boy shorts for me and Camden a 3-pack of boxers for only $2.99.

Today is the last day of the spring semester at UNCG. While I was taking pictures some students were literally HANGING OUT in Foust Park. Amazingly, I think they were actually studying (or so it seemed from their conversation).

Sunday Best

NY&CO Shirt [$18.47]
Choices (Belk) Linen Skirt - Goodwill [$3.75]
Worthington (JC Penny) Sandal
Brown Belt - Forever 21

I am back from Easter Break! I never intended to take a week from blogging, but my allergies got the best of me early last week and my planned break of 3 days turned into 9 days. I wore this outfit to church yesterday and only had a few minutes to snap some pictures so that I can finish Easter dinner. This is the first time ever that I've cook an entire holiday meal all by myself! I don't know how my mom does it! I was in the kitchen until midnight Saturday and another hour on Sunday finishing up . . . but it was delicious! The Menu: Ham, Chicken Wings, Mac and Cheese, Okra, Green Beans, Potato Salad, Croissant Rolls, Lemon Cake with Strawberries & Whipped Cream.

Greensboro Goodwill Grand Opening April 19th-23rd

I am so excited! Like, really excited! The the newest Triad Goodwill is finally opening in Greensboro at 3519 N. Elm St. The Goodwill location that I shopped the most closed a few months ago to make way for the opening of this new location which is just minutes from my house, near the intersection of Pisgah Church and N. Elm, across the street from the Harris Teeter and Ace Hardware stores shopping center (The Village at North Elm), behind Walgreens on the corner. Here's the address if my directions aren't good enough, lol.

Greensboro
3519 N. Elm Street
336-282-6402

Among the many things that I love about shopping at Goodwill is finding an item that I normally wouldn't buy in a department store without the buyer's remorse if I never wear it. A while ago, my friend Tamara and I spent a much needed girl's day thrifting and catching up (it's so time for another one). She picked out this blouse and suggested that I try it on. I didn't think it was really my style, but tried it on anyway and really liked it. I especially like the cutout detail in the back and when it's at least 60 degrees in the morning when I'm leaving the house, I plan to wear without a tank underneath. I've only been at work a few hours and have already received a few compliments. Good looking out Tamara! Now let's plan another girl's day!

George (Walmart) Cardigan [$14]
Cato Ruffle Blouse - Goodwill [$3.75]
Bijou Gold Flats - Yard Sale [Gift from Mom]
GAP Bootcut Dark Denim Jeans

The same thing happened with this sweater, when I first saw it last week in Goodwill, I skipped over it. After doing another walk-thru I decided to try it on and I really liked how it fit. For only $3.75 if I don't wear it again, it's not a huge deal. If I would have purchased at a department store for double or triple the cost and didn't wear it again, now that is a problem. But I like it, it's definitely a different look for me.
cable & gauge Sweater - Goodwill [$3.75]
The Limited Pants - Uptown Cheapskate [$14.99]
Nine West Purse - Ross [$24.99]
Accessories - NY&CO and Thrifted

Happy shopping and hope to see you at Goodwill next week!

Coral with a Spring Scarf

I can't believe it, look at who's featured in Fab Finds Under $50: April Outfit Inspiration Calendar! Kimberly is one of my favorite fashion bloggers and on those days when I really have no idea what I'm going to wear, I go to her inspiration calendars for some help. I posted this outfit in 1 Scarf, 3 Looks last month but finally had the opportunity to wear it today. It's still a little chilly in the morning here in NC, but by the time I'm headed home in the afternoon I will be taking this cardigan off.

Apostrophe (Sears) Coral Knit Dress - Goodwill [$5]
Spring Cardigan - Rainbow [$6.99 or 2 for $10]
Apostrophe Black Cardigan - [$3.83]
Apostrophe Black Stretch Belt - $24 [$1.49]

I've also included and update of my ALL Hair is Good Hair braided two strand twist updo as it has evolved over the past few weeks. It didn't last three weeks (I've been working out 3-4 times a week and it's time to wash and deep condition). I'm not totally impressed with how it's looking today, but everyone has a bad hair day every once in a while.

Spring's Trendy Color: Orange

Spring’s Trendy Color: Orange
By Yolanda Wikiel

Try the zesty shade in small doses or big splashes to boost a winter-dull wardrobe.

The spring runways were practically a citrus festival—Lacoste’s sporty clementine separates, Versace’s mandarin power suits, Marc Jacobs’s mimosa-colored silks. Orange is vibrant, it’s energizing…and you may be wondering how to pull it off without looking like a can of Fanta. Simple: Bring it down a notch with a dark neutral, or let it meet its (mis)match with a vivid complementary shade. Those with dark, olive, or tanned skin can pick from the whole Tropicana spectrum. The paler among us fare better in shades with a pink undertone, like coral or poppy.

This outfit is all New York & Company. I recently purchased a couple of orange items to add some color to my spring and summer wardrobe. I will say that the pictures just don't do the shade of orange justice, you have to see it in person to get the full effect.

NY&CO Cardigan (Red Light) $36.95 [$18.50]
NY&CO 7th Avenue Pants (Sandstorm) $42.95 [$23.40]
Navy Ruffle Front Blouse, Ruffle Neck Dress, Navy Knit Pants

(I have yet to come up with my favorite orange and navy outfit, but I've included some possibilities.)

Spring Is Here!

The weather has been so nice this past week in NC (with the exception of a few crazy storms), let's just hope that spring is here to stay. I'm finally getting the opportunity to wander around campus and take some pictures outside. One of the things that I absolutely love about UNC Greensboro's campus is all of the green spaces. One thing that I've learned about taking pictures on a college campus is to take them in the morning before students are out and about or in the late afternoon when students are returning to their dorm rooms or leaving campus.

Here's another edition of 1 Scarf, 3 Looks featuring a Bold Flower Bloom Scarf I purchased from NY&CO a few weeks ago along with a few new items for the spring/summer. Everything in the store was BOGO 50% off and I had a $50 off $100 coupon. In addition to some really great deals, I received $15 City Cash off of $30 for my purchase that can be used next month. If you haven't been in NY&CO lately, now is the time to shop during their NY Is On Sale promotion with up to 70% off spring items.

Keeping it Classic: Black and White

George (Walmart) Blouse
Xhiliration (Target) Flats
The Limited Wideleg Pants - Goodwill [$3.75]
5 Piece Pedestal Dining Set - Yard Sale [$30]
Spray Paint and Gloss - Lowe's [$4.24 each]

Every woman should have that classic black and white outfit that makes you look and feel good. I've had this shirt for at least three years now and I wear it every spring when the weather is just beginning to warm up. This outfit also happens to match my kitchen and NEW (well new to me) 5 piece dining set that I found at a yard sale! This was really one of those lucky finds that would probably never happen again because I didn't venture out until after 9 am (true yard sale shoppers know that by then all the good stuff is usually gone) with intentions of getting some gas and heading home after spending the night at my mama's house. I couldn't believe that this set was only $35, so I called my mama, who called my daddy, who happened to be right down the street to come and load it up. The owner didn't have any change so, I got it for only $30!! This set was in great condition with a few speckles on the top of the table, that was easily fixed with a can of spray paint. I have to add a clear gloss this weekend and find some red seat cushions. I really wish I knew how to sew, I would make some seat cushions and matching curtains. Sometimes the best deals are just meant to be!

Spring Color Blocking: Blue and Yellow

Outfit 1:
Old Navy Cropped Cardigan - Uptown Cheapskate [$4.99]
NY&Co Yellow Maxi Dress
White Stag (Walmart) Tank
Nine West Tan Purse - Ross [$24.99]

Outfit 2:
INC International Concepts (Macy's) T-shirt - Goodwill [$3.75]
Yellow and Gold Bangles - Forever 21
Merona (Target) Scarf

I receive so many compliments when I wear blue, so I'm not sure if that's what made it my favorite color or my love of Duke Basketball since as far back as I can remember, or the brief love affair with Dallas Cowboys football back in the day. Anyway, blue and yellow are definitely my GO TO colors for the spring! Up until this week, I've only been wearing cobalt blue on my toes (see Manicure and Pedicure). Now that the weather is warming up in NC, I'm finally able to incorporate my favorite color into my everyday wear and I am absolutely loving it! I am also loving the latest addition to my handbag family. I really wanted a Coach, but just couldn't justify the purchase with my birthday and mother's day next month (hint, hint family and friends) so I went with one of my favorite brands, Nine West in a neutral tan color that will compliment the many colors I have planned for the spring and summer.

So funny story, after taking the first few pictures for today's post this morning, I walk in my office and Rhonda compliments me on my outfit, then gasps "But, where is your necklace?" You know you have a good friend when she takes the necklace from around her neck and offers it to you make your outfit fabulous. Thanks Rhonda, she's always looking out!

Finally, I just love how a few accessories can take a simple t-shirt to another level. I found this INC t-shirt at Goodwill brand new (still had the tags on it)! I added a yellow scarf and yellow and gold bangles for a simple weekend look (or blue and gold Friday - Spartan Spirit!).

Boyfriend Blazer

I've been searching for the perfect boyfriend blazer since last year. Everytime that I thought I had found "the one" it was above the price point I wanted to spend or didn't quite fit. Last week, The Fashionista Next Door posted this picture and I couldn't believe that this blazer was Kasper! That's a brand that I would have definitely overlooked. I went thrifting over the weekend and found the perfect Kasper boyfriend blazer in Goodwill! I was a little iffy about the shoulder pads, but I felt like it gave the blazer character. I knew it was a keeper when I walked into the office yesterday and my friend Rhonda stopped me before I could make it down the hall. I plan to be on the lookout for another Kasper blazer in a bright color, perhaps red or yellow for the spring/summer.

Then and Now

I am all about purchasing quality staple items and adding trends year after after for a complete wardrobe. I purchased these knit navy bootcut pants from NY&Co years ago. Last year I added this cardigan and wore it with a white button up shirt, a white tank, a white bow-tie shirt, and a white ruffle front blouse (pictured below). I know, I kept it pretty basic. This year, I wanted to switch it up with color and added this pink blouse and I must say that I like how the colors compliment each other.

THEN: SPRING 2010

George (Walmart) Print Cardigan [$12]
Ann Taylor Loft Blouse - Goodwill [$3.75]
NY&Co Navy Bootcut Knit Pants
Brown Belt - Forever21
Nine West Earrings (Belk)

NOW: SPRING 2011
George (Walmart) Print Cardigan [$12]
Ann Taylor Loft Blouse - Goodwill [$3.75]

So it's no secret that I really love my new trench. I've been like a new kid, wearing it almost everyday.
